The importance of visiting a dentist or hygienist

A dental hygienist is just as important to visit as a dentist, it is commonly believed that visiting a dental hygienist simply entails a professional teeth clean, however there is more to an appointment than that. Cleaning your teeth at home is key to maintaining your dental hygiene, however even those individuals who maintain a rigorous routine may still have problem areas. Visiting a hygienist can give patients a cleaning treatment which aims to reduce and prevent the occurrence of plaque and tartar, which in turn can cause gum disease, and other dental issues. Dental hygiene is just as important as orthodontics, and visiting your local dental hygienist can help you maintain your dental routine at home. Having a good routine and receiving an in-depth clean can help reduce the chances of developing tooth decay and loss. Visiting a hygienist can help you decide where your dental problems may lie. Dental hygienists help to decipher where your issues may be coming from, such as removing sugary, acidic foods from your diet. Special tools can also be used to help reach hard to get to areas and therefore improve your dental health. Hygienists are an excellent alternative for patients who may wish to whiten their teeth naturally. Pregnant women, and other individuals who may not be able to undergo this procedure may visit a hygienist. Hygienists are able to lift and remove staining so teeth whitening might not have to be an option.

Treatments available at a dentist in Richmond

Restorative dentistry is just one of the options available at dental practices in Richmond. Restorative dentistry as a general term means restoring your teeth and therefore your mouth to a healthy and aesthetically pleasing state, as well as managing any oral health problems. A simple example of restorative dentistry would be dental implants. The goal of most dental practices is to preserve the natural original teeth and avoid removing or damaging any teeth unnecessarily.

There are two types of dental restoration; direct and indirect. A direct dental restoration is a simple procedure like a filling, this can be either a natural porcelain filling or a traditional metal filling.

An indirect form of restoration is slightly more complicated, a personalised tooth replacement such as a crown which covers the entire chewing surface of a tooth. Another form is an inlay or onlay, which covers a smaller surface area of the tooth to cover the cusp of the tooth. Indirect treatments require more than one session, as the inlay and onlays have to be fabricated in a lab.

Other forms of restorative dentistry can consist of bridges, dentures, and crowns. Bridges are an alternative way to replace teeth. One form of this is a partial denture, and another option is a fixed bridge. Bridges are usually used if there are fewer amounts of teeth that need replacing. Bridges are made from a metal base and can be fixed to the jaw. Both bridges and dentures enable you to chew normally and are a long-term solution, as well as helping to create a natural looking smile.
