What are Invisalign?
To put it simply, these are clear removable, retainers which push the teeth into alignment over a short period of time.Using a series of custom-made retainers which are created from 3D scans and moulds, the treatment works by the patient wearing a retainer for 22 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are sets of retainers provided so after around 2 weeks it will be necessary to switch to the second set of retainers. Each set wil adjust the teeth gradually so following your dental advice and only removing the retainer for food consumption and your dental oral hygiene routine is important to keep on track with your treatment.
Whilst this particular orthodontic treatment is more suited to the mild to moderate cases of misalignment, overcrowding or underbite, it is only during a thorough examination and consultation with your dental team will the decision be made.
Fixed braces on the other hand require brackets to be attached to the front of the teeth which are then joined together by wires. These braces are extremely effective on the more serious cases of tooth misalignment. Whilst considered to be a traditional method, advances within the dentistry world have also meant that tooth coloured brackets and wires have been able to develop ensuring that this treatment is as inconspicuous as possible.
So which one is better?
When discussing which treatment is better, it is important to realise that this is not a case of ‘the most expensive is the best’. Or the one that has the less time will be a more severe method of realignment. There are actually a variety of fundamentals to consider including the nature and severity of the misalignment, overcrowding or underbite. The decision of what treatment would suit you best comes down to the individual case each time as there are many aspects to consider.
In conjunction with the effectiveness of the treatment is one of appearance. In today’s society appearance is everything. If you are an adult who is constantly using their smile within a customer service based role, having metal braces may fill you with dread and yet wearing clear removable, aligners would work amazingly for your self-confidence.
No matter what the circumstances, these can all be discussed within your consultation appointment as the most important thing is that the treatment works for you both physically and emotionally. There is no point going for a treatment where you fill the need to lock yourself away. WIth today’s modern advances in dental knowledge and technology there is no need for you to feel uncomfortable. No matter what the dental problem is, together your dental team and yourself can come up with a suitable solution.
So remember, It is not that one treatment is considered to be a quick, cheap method, it is about which one works for you and your case.
It is important to note that as with all treatments and procedures there are potential risks and possible side effects with some treatments. For this reason it is always advisable to seek further information and advice from your local dental team to ensure that you are fully informed and comfortable with the options set out before you.
