Do you remember the last time you had an appointment with a dentist? You may not feel that you need to and are not experiencing any dental issues, however, it is important to ensure that your teeth, gums and mouth remain healthy, you have regular check-ups at your local dental practice. So, if you are based in Luton, why not book a routine check-up with a dentist to ensure your teeth remain at their optimum health.

The benefits of having regular check-ups

When you have a check-up at a dental practice, it allows the Luton Dentist to identify whether you have any dental issues along with keeping your mouth healthy. Depending on your dental health, the dentist can recommend that you have a dental check-up anywhere between every three months to every two years. Generally, the less dental issues you have, the longer you can wait until your next check-up. It is important that you keep on top of your dental check-up as untreated dental problems can become more difficult to treat over time.

What to expect as a new patient?

If you are based in Luton and have not visited your local dental practice before, you can expect, as a new patient, an oral health assessment, also known as a new patient exam. This allows the dental practice to review both your health and dental history, along with a dental evaluation. The dental evaluation allows a dentist Luton to examine your teeth and evaluate the overall health of your teeth, including looking at any restorative dental treatments you may have had such as crowns, dental implants and fillings.

The dentist Luton will take intra-oral and extra-oral photos along with digital x-rays which will allow them to detect if you are currently dealing with any dental issues such as tooth decay or cavities. The photos are also particularly useful if you are having cosmetic dental treatment such as porcelain veneers or orthodontic treatment as it allows you to see your teeth before treatment and once the treatment is complete.

In addition to this your gum will also be screened for periodontal diseases and your mouth will be checked for oral cancer. This examination is quick and painless and looks at your gums, throat, neck, mouth and lips.

If it is identified that you require further dental treatment, or this is something that you have expressed to the dentist, the oral assessment will also allow you to discuss your current dental concerns, along with your long-term goals.

If during the oral health assessment, the dentist identifies some plaque and tartar deposits on your teeth, they will recommend you book an appointment to see the dental hygienist.

Dental hygienists are trained in providing oral hygiene advice and treating periodontal diseases in patients of all ages, in order to help individuals, achieve and maintain good oral health. It is also recommended that you book regular hygiene appointments to ensure optimum oral health and fresh breath.
