Heard that dental implants are painful? 5 facts your dental team wants you to know

Regardless of your age, having a tooth or teeth missing as an adult is hard.

It can impact your smile, your confidence and as teeth are an essential part of the digestive system, it can play havoc with your eating habits too. And, as many dental teams will tell you, having a missing tooth in your mouth can make oral hygiene habits more difficult to maintain too; the exposed gums act as a magnet for plaque and bacteria, which may lead to secondary issues such as gum disease and even tooth decay. Yikes!

Luckily, there has been a somewhat popular and affordable solution for missing teeth; dentures. But many people who wear them are irritated by their movements and even the sore spots which they cause against the gums, alongside offering no feeling when biting food.

In 2020, there is a more modern alternative that offers the cosmetic relief of dentures with the bite strength of natural teeth; dental implants. A mainstay of many a dentist in St.Johns Wood, dental implants have helped thousands of people rebuild their confidence without compromising their bites.

However, this cosmetic/restorative treatment has heralded more than a few myths that you may have already heard during online searches. Below is the truth behind the mistruths about dental implants.

Everyone will notice my dental implants

Provided that your implants are fitted by a trained dentist from St.John’s Wood, no-one will notice you are wearing them.

Your dentist near St. Johns Wood will carefully craft your implants to match any surrounding natural teeth in shape, size and colour, allowing them to blend in seamlessly.

Having implants fitted is agonising

While having traditional endosteal implants fitted may sound uncomfortable, your dental team will ensure your mouth is sufficiently numbed before beginning the procedure.

As the numbing agent wears away post-fitting, any discomfort that you have should be manageable with over the counter pain relief. If it isn’t, contact your dental team for an emergency appointment.

Dental implants are really expensive

Given that the charge associated with dental implants covers the surgery, the aftercare, the advice provided by your dental team, and the fact that the fittings last over 20 years, dental implants often work out at being surprisingly cheap!

They require a lot of extra care

Initially, as your gums heal, yes, you may need to be a bit more careful to prevent any discomfort.

But in day to day life, oral implants require no extra care. Once fitted, you will need to brush them twice a day and you will still need to attend biannual dental check-ups, but this is the minimum level of care required to keep your natural teeth healthy, so there is no difference!

Fitted bridges are just as good as implants

Fitted bridges offer more stability than dentures, but they put additional pressure on the natural tooth they are affixed to, often causing secondary cracks to occur in the enamel. Ergo, they are not as good as long-term as implants.
