Dangers of missing teeth you may not have considered

Thanks to modern dentistry, there are multiple options for replacing missing teeth. It is important that dental function is restored as soon as possible when teeth are lost to injury or decay and installing missing teeth replacement devices helps achieve this goal.

All missing teeth replacement devices are designed to function like natural teeth, but only one mirrors the actual design of natural teeth to offer the pleasing natural look, feel and function of real teeth – implants Sheffield and it is for these very same reasons that they are naturally the go-to option for patients and dental practitioners.

The most obvious danger of losing natural teeth is the smile. The loss of a beautiful smile is a topmost concern and naturally so. After all, it is winning smiles that will help you make a positive impression on others so that you can make friends, get hired and find love.

While all of the above are critical for living a good quality of life, there are other equally important roles we rely on healthy teeth to perform.

Concerns are raised when natural teeth are lost

The Oral Health Foundation is categorically clear on the consequences of poor oral health – oral infections have been proven to cause problems in other parts of the body. Respiratory lung disease, heart disease, strokes, diabetes complications and premature birth or low birth weight are all physical health concerns that have been linked with dental diseases like periodontitis.

It is the main culprit of dental diseases – bad bacteria – that is the common thread linking poor oral health with poor physical health. When poor oral hygiene allows bad bacteria to reach overwhelming proportions, the environment in the mouth is ripe for disease and decay to set in.

The overflow of bacteria lands up in the bloodstream through which they travel to the blood vessels in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It is in these blood vessels that bad bacteria originating in the mouth trigger blood clots and inflammatory conditions that result in illness.

Another aspect of overall health that may suffer when oral hygiene declines is mental health. Like physical health, studies have also shown how dental diseases can put a heavy burden on mental health. According to one research study, researchers concluded that periodontal disease and tooth loss raised the risk of dementia and cognitive decline. The results of the study showed that people with gum disease stand a 23 per cent chance of developing dementia.

When it comes to poor oral health, the consequences of missing teeth extend beyond reduced dental function. There are dental health concerns too like damage to existing teeth and orthodontic problems. Biting and chewing places extra pressure on the remaining teeth in the mouth which can lead to wear and tear that weakens tooth enamel. When vacant sockets left by missing teeth are not filled in, teeth on either side of the gap can begin to shift out of position creating additional problems that require appropriate dental treatments.

Taking care of your oral health will not only help you retain your natural teeth for life, but will also help protect against life-threatening illnesses and complications.
