Why Your Oral Hygiene Is So Important

People do not often realise how important it is to maintain good oral hygiene until it is too late. Putting off visiting your dentist and not cleaning your teeth thoroughly can result in tooth decay and gum disease. This can result in tooth loss, and nobody really wants to lose their teeth. Your dentist in Kings Hill can explain why your dental hygiene is so important and will help you to get back on track, if you have let your tooth cleaning regime slide.

You should be organising a dental examination for yourself around twice a year, to make sure that there are no underlying problems that you are not aware of. Some people will need to visit their dental practice more frequently than this, depending on the severity of the condition of their teeth and mouth. If people are undergoing treatment then they will also be expected to attend more regular appointments, to ensure that their treatment is going to plan.

What can happen if you do not take care of your teeth

Bad breath and a build-up of plaque can be the start of some very serious conditions if you do not take care of your teeth. Tooth decay, gingivitis and gum disease can become present if you do not maintain a certain standard of oral hygiene.

Conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease will usually end up in you needing more extensive dental treatment than you would have needed if you had kept your teeth clean. This can result in more expensive dental bills, more time off work and a multitude of other things that are incredibly inconvenient.

Having poor oral hygiene can also impact your social interaction. If you have really bad breath you might try and avoid having conversations with people if they are too close, or you may not feel like you can smile in public if you have a gap. Visiting your dentist will enable you to resolve most of your dental issues and leave you feeling much more confident and ready to smile.

How to take care of your teeth properly

There are several things that you can do to increase the strength and overall health of your teeth. The number one thing is that you brush them properly twice a day. Whether you use an electric or manual toothbrush does not matter, if you are making sure to brush your teeth thoroughly. You should not brush your teeth directly after eating food as it softens the enamel. Waiting at least an hour after eating means you are less likely to damage the surface of your teeth.

Using mouthwash after you have brushed your teeth is important too, as this helps combat bad breath, as well as removing plaque that cannot necessarily be reached by your toothbrush. It is also necessary to floss your teeth. This ensures that no plaque is building up at the bottom of your teeth beneath your gums, as it is easy to miss these spots when only using a toothbrush.

If you are missing teeth, your dental practitioner will advise you on what type of brushes you should be using for your gums and teeth to ensure that you do not damage them.
